Art Basel is making its strongest commitment yet to digital practices with the largest edition to date of its global initiative Zero 10. Titled The Condition, the expanded program debuts at the fair’s flagship Swiss edition in Basel this June, featuring 20 exhibitors in an open-format presentation in the Event Hall at Messeplatz.

Co-curated by acclaimed artist Trevor Paglen (2026 LG Guggenheim Award recipient and MacArthur Fellow) and digital art strategist Eli Scheinman, The Condition explores life in a world saturated by digital imagery, artificial intelligence, computational systems, and machine vision. The presentation spans roughly seven decades of instruction-based, generative, computational, and media art.

Paglen, known for his critical investigations into surveillance, technology, and hidden infrastructures, stressed the importance of rigorous selection. “There has been a lot of dross in digital art, frankly,” he noted, “so the idea was to choose works we felt were museum-quality.” The program bridges historical pioneers such as Vera Molnár, Mary Ellen Bute, and Ben F. Laposky with contemporary voices including Hito Steyerl, Avery Singer, Andreas Gursky, Ryoji Ikeda, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, John Gerrard, and Agnieszka Kurant.

This marks Zero 10’s most ambitious outing following successful iterations at Art Basel Miami Beach (2025) and Hong Kong (2026). The Basel edition moves beyond traditional booth structures toward a more fluid, discursive exhibition model, incorporating immersive installations, generative works, and media-based pieces. Participating galleries include Hauser & Wirth, with innovative platforms like Art Blocks also featured.

Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel, has positioned digital art as central to the fair’s evolution: “digital art is no longer at the margins — it is integral to how art and the market are evolving in real time.” The initiative reflects broader industry shifts, moving past early NFT speculation toward sustained critical engagement and institutional integration.

Eli Scheinman highlighted the program’s ambition to foster meaningful dialogue between technology-native creators and established institutions. Visitors can expect explorations of surveillance, AI ethics, algorithmic culture, and the blurred boundaries between human and machine creativity.

The open-format sector will be accessible to the public free of charge during the main fair dates (June 17–21, 2026), with preview access on June 16.
