Uncovering Ancient Masterpieces: Recent Finds in Alexandria and Laodicea

Recent archaeological finds across the Mediterranean are shedding fresh light on the artistic brilliance of Greek and Roman sculptors, whose works masterfully blended idealism, realism, and divine symbolism.

One of the most striking revelations comes from Alexandria, Egypt, where excavators in the Muharram Bek district uncovered a trove of Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine artifacts. Amid the remains of a rare circular Ptolemaic-era public bathhouse and a Roman villa adorned with intricate mosaics, teams found marble statues depicting deities including Bacchus (Dionysus)—with flowing drapery and idealized anatomy—and Asclepius, the god of medicine. A headless statue, likely representing Athena or her Roman counterpart Minerva, highlights the cultural fusion of Greek artistry under Ptolemaic and later Roman rule.

These discoveries underscore Alexandria’s role as a vibrant hub of trade and culture. Coins, pottery, and sealed amphorae recovered alongside the statues point to prosperous Mediterranean networks. “The finds redraw the urban map of ancient Alexandria,” noted Egyptian antiquities officials.

Farther afield, in Laodicea (modern-day Denizli, Turkey), archaeologists celebrated the unearthing of a nearly two-meter-tall white marble statue of Athena. Discovered face-down near the theater’s postskene, the Roman-period figure features exquisite details, including a Medusa emblem on the chest and a distinctive cape.

Roman sculptors often emulated Greek originals, as seen in collections like the Torlonia masterpieces currently touring. Yet originals and variants alike reveal technical prowess—from the contrapposto stance perfected in Classical Greece to hyper-realistic Imperial portraiture. A recent 1,500-year-old Roman statue head found reused in the foundations of Rome’s Basilica of Santo Stefano reminds us how these works were repurposed across centuries.
