Syracuse University Art Museum Receives Major Gift of Contemporary Art
Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse University Art Museum has announced a transformative donation that significantly strengthens its holdings in contemporary art, particularly in lens-based media and diverse artistic voices.
Collector Nancy Delman Portnoy has gifted more than 25 works by 16 artists to the museum. The donation, facilitated by university alumna Elizabeth “Liz” C. Tenenbaum ’98, broadens the institution’s representation across painting, photography, and multidisciplinary practices.
Highlights of the gift include pieces by prominent figures such as Rashid Johnson, John Waters, Shimon Attie, David Goldblatt, and Abel Barroso. These acquisitions enhance the museum’s focus on contemporary perspectives and provide rich material for teaching, research, and public engagement.
Museum officials noted that the gift “transforms the museum’s holdings in lens-based media” while expanding its commitment to centering varied contemporary narratives. The works will integrate into the permanent collection, supporting academic programs and future exhibitions at the Shaffer Art Center.

This generous contribution arrives as the museum continues to showcase recent acquisitions in its ongoing programming, reinforcing its role as a vital hub for arts education in Central New York.
Nancy Delman Portnoy’s philanthropy underscores the importance of private collectors in sustaining institutional growth amid evolving contemporary art landscapes.
