Renowned British Artist and Filmmaker Steve McQueen Awarded 2026 Erasmus Prize

AMSTERDAM — The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation announced today that Steve McQueen, the acclaimed British artist and filmmaker, is the recipient of the 2026 Erasmus Prize, one of Europe’s most prestigious cultural honors. Often described as the Dutch equivalent of the Nobel Prize for the arts and humanities, the award recognizes exceptional contributions to culture, scholarship, and society.

This year’s theme, “Ecce Homo: Behold the Human Being,” aligns powerfully with McQueen’s oeuvre, which unflinchingly examines vulnerability, historical trauma, human resilience, and moral complexity. The prize includes a €150,000 cash award (approximately $172,000) and will be presented in a formal ceremony in Amsterdam this autumn, traditionally attended by His Majesty the King of the Netherlands.

McQueen, born in 1969 in London, rose to international prominence with works that blur the boundaries between cinema, visual art, and documentary. His feature films, including the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave (2013), have earned critical and commercial success, while his gallery-based installations and films—such as the epic Occupied City (2023), a haunting exploration of Amsterdam during the Holocaust—delve deeply into collective memory and personal stories.

The Foundation praised McQueen for exploring “who we are in moments of vulnerability, how we treat each other, and how history shapes our present, without judgment nor fear of moral complexity.” His practice continues a humanist tradition rooted in the spirit of Desiderius Erasmus, the 16th-century Dutch scholar after whom the prize is named.

Gallery representatives from Marian Goodman and Thomas Dane expressed congratulations, noting McQueen’s ongoing exhibition Atlas at De Pont Museum in Tilburg, his first major solo institutional show in the Netherlands.

This recognition arrives as McQueen’s influence spans both the art world and mainstream cinema, cementing his status as one of the most vital voices of his generation. The Erasmus Prize underscores the enduring power of art to confront suffering while celebrating the human spirit.
