Jefferson City’s long-standing artistic community is gearing up for another celebration of local creativity. The Jefferson City Art Club (JCAC), a nonprofit organization supporting visual artists since 1903, will present its 2026 member exhibit at the Missouri River Regional Library. The non-juried show, featuring 30–40 works by club members, opens in early May and runs through July 31, 2026.
Visitors will be able to view the display in the upstairs art gallery during regular library hours, offering an accessible, free opportunity to experience original paintings, drawings, photography, and mixed-media pieces created by central Missouri artists.
Founded more than 120 years ago, the Jefferson City Art Club continues its mission to promote local school artists, amateur and professional creators, and regional talent. The club organizes multiple exhibitions each year, including youth programs and the prestigious Adult Fine Art Exhibit, which began in 1951 and alternates between competitive and professional formats.
This spring’s library member show provides a welcoming, inclusive platform distinct from the juried Adult Fine Art Exhibit. JCAC members are encouraged to contribute works, fostering a diverse collection that reflects personal styles and local inspiration — from Missouri River landscapes to abstract explorations and everyday still lifes.
Club treasurer Ruth Fisher helps coordinate these efforts alongside other officers, including 1st Vice-President Phil Schroeder and 2nd Vice-President J.C. Jackson. Meetings occur on the third Monday of each month at The Art Gallery Studio, where members share techniques, hear guest presentations, and conduct business.

Past JCAC exhibits at the Missouri River Regional Library have highlighted the club’s supportive environment. In previous years, longtime member Phil Schroeder, who joined in the late 1980s, has spoken about how the group inspires participants through shared presentations and community. Similarly, Faye Zumwalt has been photographed adjusting nametags beneath her oil still lifes during installation.
While specific works for the 2026 member exhibit are still being prepared, the show promises the same eclectic mix that has characterized recent displays. Many pieces draw from Missouri’s natural beauty, state history, and the rhythms of daily life in the capital city.
Today also marks a joyful local milestone: Rodney Garnett, a dedicated area artist, celebrates his 90th birthday with family and friends at Tebbetts Community Hall. Such occasions underscore the intergenerational nature of the local arts scene, where creators of all ages find encouragement through organizations like the JCAC.
The club’s youth initiatives, including the High School Sketch Day (scheduled for April 20–May 2, 2026), demonstrate its commitment to nurturing the next generation. Organizers note that the Ruth Hogan Children’s Art Show was paused this year due to lower participation, but they hope renewed outreach will strengthen future programs.

Following the library member exhibit, attention will turn to the 2026 JCAC Adult Fine Art Exhibit at Capital Arts Gallery (1203 Missouri Blvd.). The competitive show runs May 7 through June 6, 2026, with separate professional and amateur divisions. Pre-registration is required by Monday, April 27, 2026, with hand-delivery of accepted works on May 5. An artists’ reception is planned for Thursday, May 14, 5–7 p.m.
Entry forms and details are available on the club’s website. The exhibit awards ribbons and monetary prizes, providing valuable recognition for local and regional artists.
In an era dominated by digital media, physical community exhibitions like this one at the Missouri River Regional Library play a vital role. They transform public spaces into venues for dialogue, reflection, and appreciation of handmade art. Library patrons — whether students, families, or professionals — gain spontaneous encounters with works created by their neighbors.
The partnership between the JCAC and public institutions exemplifies how grassroots arts organizations enrich civic life by lowering barriers to exhibition and fostering a sense of shared cultural ownership.

As preparations continue for the May opening (with setup scheduled for May 2), the Jefferson City Art Club invites the public to engage with its programming. Membership remains open to anyone interested in the visual arts, with dues supporting exhibitions, outreach, and community events.
