In the historic heart of Diriyah, where ancient mud-brick architecture meets a vibrant creative renaissance, the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2026 has solidified its position as a landmark cultural event redefining Saudi Arabia’s role on the global art stage. Running from January 30 to May 2, 2026, at the dynamic JAX District—a transformed industrial precinct just outside Riyadh—the third edition, titled In Interludes and Transitions (في الحِلّ والترحال), invited visitors to contemplate movement, migration, transformation, and the fluid rhythms of human, planetary, and spiritual life.
Artistic Directors Nora Razian and Sabih Ahmed, working with an expanded curatorial team including Maan Abu Taleb, May Makki, Kabelo Malatsie, and Lantian Xie, crafted an exhibition deeply rooted in the nomadic heritage of the Arabian Peninsula. The title draws from a colloquial Arabic phrase celebrating companionship through cycles of settlement and journey. More than 70 artists from over 37 countries participated, presenting a rich tapestry of installations, performances, sound works, and over 20 newly commissioned pieces that entangle humans with multi-species, spiritual, and technological currents.
Standout contributions came from artists including Pacita Abad, Etel Adnan, Théo Mercier, Oscar Santillán, Agustina Woodgate, Afra Al Dhaheri, Mohammed Alhamdan, and Raqs Media Collective. Scenography by the acclaimed studio Formafantasma, with architectural contributions from Sammy Zarka, transformed the industrial spaces into flowing, porous passages where ideas unfolded organically across disciplines. From immersive sonic environments built from local field recordings to participatory performances echoing desert caravans, the Biennale celebrated transformation without imposing singular narratives.
Beyond the main exhibition, the event strengthened community ties through robust public programs. As Special Projects Partner, Deutsche Bank supported inclusive CSR initiatives, including creative workshops for children with special needs and the Studio Youth Upcycling Wonderground, where young participants repurposed exhibition materials into imaginative installations. These efforts underscored the Biennale’s commitment to accessibility, education, and fostering dialogue across generations.
Set against Diriyah’s layered heritage near a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Biennale amplified both Saudi and regional voices while fostering genuine global exchange. By weaving contemporary practices with histories of movement and connection, it established JAX District as a thriving hub for cultural production. As Saudi Arabia continues investing in its creative infrastructure, this edition stands as compelling evidence of art’s power to bridge past, present, and future.
