Johanna Dumet: Rising Star of Vibrant Still Life Painting
Berlin-based French artist Johanna Dumet has emerged as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary painting. Born in 1991 in Guéret, France, Dumet is largely self-taught and draws from her early love of color and form. After studying fashion and spending time in Barcelona, she relocated to Berlin around 2013, where she fully committed to painting. Her work revives the traditional still life genre with a bold, modern twist—vibrant palettes, layered textures, collage elements, and personal objects that blur boundaries between abstraction, fashion, and everyday life.
Dumet’s expressive canvases often feature sumptuous meals, floral arrangements, and symbolic motifs rendered in dramatic hues. She incorporates stitched canvas fragments, found items like ribbons, beads, vintage cards, and medals, turning each piece into a personal talisman. Her approach is honest and free, rooted in joy and intuition rather than rigid concepts.
In 2025, Dumet achieved a major milestone with her solo exhibition “FOOL FOR A LIFETIME” at KÖNIG GALERIE in Berlin. Running from September 10 to November 9 during Berlin Art Week, the show featured 22 large-scale oil paintings inspired by the major arcana of the tarot, including classics like the Tarot de Marseille. Each canvas, measuring around 205 x 105 cm with rounded corners to mimic oversized cards, combined oil paint with embedded personal relics—such as playing cards from her grandparents in “XII Le Pendu” (The Hanged Man) or ribbons from past travels in “XIX Le Soleil” (The Sun). For the first time, she introduced outdoor sculptures at the gallery’s St. Agnes entrance and Nave, expanding her practice into three dimensions.
The exhibition drew widespread acclaim for its playful yet profound exploration of fate, folly, and the artist’s role as a modern “fool” who dreams and inspires. Dumet’s work has appeared in group shows across Europe, including at KEWENIG (formerly associated with her representation) and international fairs like Art Basel. Her pieces have performed strongly at auction, with paintings fetching up to nearly $20,000, signaling growing collector interest.
Dumet’s rise reflects broader trends in contemporary art toward expressive, narrative-driven figuration infused with personal storytelling. As she continues to evolve—blending her fashion background with painterly innovation—she stands poised for even greater recognition in 2026 and beyond.
