South Asian Art Auction Hits $2.02 Million: Key Insights

NEW YORK — Christie’s annual South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art Online auction concluded on April 1, 2026, achieving a total of $2.02 million with a flawless 100% sell-through rate across 109 lots. The sale, running from March 18 to April 1, comfortably exceeded its pre-sale high estimate and underscored sustained global appetite for modern masters from the Indian subcontinent and its diaspora.

The standout lot was Mohan Samant’s Untitled (White Wall) (1960), which realized $152,400 — an impressive 408% above its low estimate of $30,000. The mixed-media work, known for its textured surfaces and layered abstraction, captured the attention of collectors seeking rare examples from the artist’s mid-career period. Samant (1924-2004), a key figure associated with progressive tendencies in Indian modernism, blended tactile experimentation with evocative forms, making this piece a highlight of the auction.

Other notable results included strong performances by Avinash Chandra, Francis Newton Souza, and Paresh Maity, reflecting broad bidder interest across price points. Works on paper and prints by artists such as Zainul Abedin, Ivan Peries, and Jogen Chowdhury also found enthusiastic buyers, signaling healthy demand in the more accessible segments of the market.

The online format continues to democratize access to South Asian art, drawing participation from new and established collectors worldwide. This sale follows Christie’s robust live auction earlier in the week during Asian Art Week in New York, which together highlight the category’s momentum amid a broader resurgence of interest in non-Western modernisms.

Experts note that the white-glove result reflects growing confidence in mid-20th-century Indian artists whose experimental approaches resonate with contemporary audiences. As the market evolves, institutions and private buyers alike appear increasingly drawn to works that bridge tradition and innovation.

Christie’s next major offerings in the category include planned sales in London and Hong Kong later in 2026, promising further opportunities for collectors.
