Aargauer Kunsthaus Opens Artificial Creativity With Botto’s Ethereum 1/1

A one-of-one Ethereum NFT is hanging in a Swiss kunsthaus this morning, and the news for an NFT Art desk is the museum context, not a floor price. Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau opens Artificial Creativity today, September 26, 2026, and keeps it through January 10, 2027. The museum’s English exhibition page already publishes installation views dated to that run and a caption for Botto’s Utility Stream (2022): VQGAN + CLIP, a 1/1 NFT (Ethereum), JPEG, 2048 × 2048 pixels, 1.6 MB, courtesy of BottoDAO. That is the onchain fact. Fourteen artists and collaborations are named on the same page. The July press release and an Art Daily recap of the museum’s language place the show under director-curator Dr. Katharina Ammann, with Florian Brand as assistant curator, in cooperation with HEK (House of Electronic Arts) in Basel. Hours on the kunsthaus site are Tuesday–Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday until 8:00 p.m., closed Monday, at Aargauerplatz, 5001 Aarau.
Botto is listed as an AI system active since 2021, not as a conventional solo painter. The caption does not assign a wallet address or a marketplace URL, and this file will not invent one. What the museum chose to print is the chain, the edition, the model pairing, and the DAO credit. In a week when ArtChain has already filed 0xfff’s contract sculptures at Nguyen Wahed and earlier onchain hangs at Heft, SuperRare, and MoMI, the unused peg is a cantonal Swiss museum treating a 1/1 Ethereum JPEG as a peer object inside a survey of machine creativity. The rest of the room is not an NFT fair. It is a kunsthaus argument about authorship after ChatGPT entered public use at the end of 2022, the date the July press release uses as its everyday-life marker.
The official artist list is Alfatih, Niculin Barandun, Botto, Terence Broad, Onome Ekeh, Emanuel Gollob, Tobias Gutmann, Holly Herndon & Mat Dryhurst, Hochschuh & Donovan, Esther Hunziker, Simone C. Niquille, Theresa Reiwer, Monica Studer / Christoph van den Berg, and Robi Voigt. Captions on the exhibition page give material facts that stay inside art history rather than token talk. Studer and van den Berg appear with HALLUC stills and a 2023–2026 FOWDIB AI Core: HALLUC installation photograph by David Aebi. Voigt’s QUANTUM DREAMS. AARGAU is dated 2026. Barandun’s Neural Fiction (2024) is a realtime video triptych. Ekeh’s Glittering Witness (2024) is an eighteen-part ASCII image on aluminum, each panel 60 × 60 cm. Reiwer’s Lasting Generation (2024) is a multichannel video made with David Egger and support from HAU Hebbel am Ufer and the Hauptstadtkulturfonds. Niquille’s The Image Stack: training cycle is dated 2026. Gollob’s disarming II is dated 2023. Hochschuh & Donovan’s Interconnected (2025) is captioned as fifty custom differential-drive robots. Gutmann appears with Sai Bot, an AI system since 2019, in the ongoing Face-o-mat (since 2013). Alfatih’s A Way Out of Time (2024) combines a stroller with realtime video. Hunziker’s Screen Tests is dated 2025. Herndon, Dryhurst, and sub, led by Niklas Bildstein Zaar, are represented by The Oratory (2024), powder-coated steel and 3D-printed panels, 349.14 × 97 × 18.5 cm, shown with a Serpentine credit. Those measurements and dates are the museum’s. They are here to show that the Ethereum 1/1 sits among sculptures, robots, VR, and training-cycle installations, not on a trading tape.
The July press release, posted as a PDF on the kunsthaus domain, organizes the hang around three questions: how AI enters artistic process; how generated content changes the perception of reality; and what happens when AI becomes spatial, physical, and social. Creativity, the museum writes, does not simply move from human to machine. It arises from people, data, technical systems, and the culture that decides what counts as creative. Datasets, rules, prompts, and training environments are both tools and subjects. Hallucinations are treated as persuasive gaps that can be artistically productive rather than only as errors. Interactive works make shared agency visible, the release says, while insisting that AI lacks intention, understanding, and responsibility. Those remain with the people and institutions that develop, deploy, exhibit, and evaluate the systems. Art Daily’s later recap follows that press language closely, including the learning space with two chatbots that ask visitors to place themselves between utopia and dystopia, and a test laboratory in the ground-floor Freiraum where the public can try image-generating tools. A publication accompanying the show, named in the same release, includes computer scientist Dr. Eva Cetinić of the University of Zurich on generative AI and latent space, philosopher Dr. Julia Langkau of the University of Geneva on human and artificial creativity, questions posed by artist Beni Bischof, and responses from participating artists. A media preview was scheduled for Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Ammann and Brand, which is now in the past and explains why installation photographs are already on the public page.
Institutional credits are also public. The exhibition page thanks UBS as a 2026 sponsor of Artificial Creativity. The press release thanks Sabine Himmelsbach and HEK, the Canton of Aargau, the Aargauischer Kunstverein, the Swisslos Fund, the City of Aarau, and the Federal Office of Culture. HEK is described in that PDF as a Basel venue for digital culture since 2011. Aargauer Kunsthaus describes itself as a leading museum for Swiss art. None of those lines is a token prospectus. They locate a DAO-credited 1/1 inside a publicly funded cantonal program about responsibility and authorship.
For NFT Art readers the verified story is that a Swiss museum opened today with Botto’s 2022 Utility Stream labeled in the wall-adjacent caption as a one-of-one Ethereum NFT, inside a fourteen-artist survey curated by Katharina Ammann with HEK. The onchain work is one object among robots, VR, ASCII aluminum, and a Serpentine-linked steel oratory. Confirm hours and any holiday closure on aargauerkunsthaus.ch before crossing Aargauerplatz. The hang is dated through January 10, 2027. The 1/1 is already in the room.
