KAWS: From New York Graffiti Roots to Global Pop Culture Phenomenon
Brian Donnelly, better known by his artistic alias KAWS, has solidified his position as one of the most influential figures bridging street art, contemporary fine art, and commercial design. Born in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Donnelly rose from tagging subway cars and billboards in the 1990s to creating iconic characters that now inhabit museums, public spaces, and fashion collaborations worldwide.
His signature style—featuring cartoon-inspired figures with crossed-out “X” eyes—taps into universal emotions of isolation, companionship, and consumer culture, often reimagining familiar icons like Mickey Mouse or SpongeBob in melancholic or anatomical twists.

Early Career: Graffiti to Subvertising
KAWS began his journey as a graffiti artist in New York, spray-painting walls and freight trains before moving on to “subvertising”—altering advertisements in bus shelters and phone booths with his own cartoonish interventions. After earning a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, he worked as a freelance background animator on shows including Daria and Doug.
In 1999, a pivotal collaboration with Japanese streetwear brand Bounty Hunter led to the creation of COMPANION, his breakout 7-inch vinyl toy. The figure, with its skull-like head and X-ed eyes, quickly became a cult object, especially in Japan, launching a line of limited-edition collectibles that blurred the lines between art and merchandise.

Companion has since evolved into monumental sculptures and inflatable installations seen around the globe.

Major Institutional Recognition in 2025–2026
2026 marks a banner year for KAWS. His first major museum exhibition on the U.S. West Coast, KAWS: FAMILY, opened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) on November 15, 2025, and runs through May 3, 2026. The show features over 100 works spanning three decades, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and collectible toys. At its heart is the large-scale bronze sculpture FAMILY (2021), depicting recurring characters COMPANION, BFF, and CHUM grouped together.

The exhibition has drawn critical acclaim for its exploration of shared cultural memory and emotional resonance through pop language. Complementing it is the rooftop inflatable HOLIDAY: SAN FRANCISCO, part of KAWS’s ongoing global HOLIDAY series of oversized Companion figures.

Later in 2026, Albertina Modern in Vienna will present KAWS: Art & Comix (April 3–September 27), placing his characters alongside comic and fine art traditions.
Market Impact and Collaborations
KAWS’s work commands strong prices in both primary and secondary markets, with sculptures and paintings appealing to collectors across generations. His collaborations—with brands like Uniqlo (where he was named the first Artist in Residence in 2025), Nike, and others—have extended his reach far beyond the gallery system. Earlier honors include the Clio Visionary Award for his contributions to popular culture and creative branding.
Why KAWS Matters in 2026
As museums increasingly embrace artists who engage mass audiences without sacrificing conceptual depth, KAWS stands out. His ability to transform familiar visual language into something poignant—often evoking loneliness amid abundance—resonates in a digital, consumer-driven era.
With major shows drawing record visitors and new institutional chapters unfolding, KAWS is not only an artist to watch but one whose influence continues to shape how contemporary art intersects with everyday life.
