In a significant boost for cultural exchange in the Middle East, Art Basel has appointed Iraqi curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi as Artistic Director of its 2027 edition in Qatar. The announcement, made earlier this week, positions the respected curator at the helm of the fair’s second iteration, set to unfold in Doha from January 28 to 30, 2027, with preview days on January 26 and 27.

Al-Khudhairi brings a wealth of experience and a deeply personal connection to the region. Born in Kuwait to Iraqi parents, she has long championed modern and contemporary art from the Arab world. As the founding director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, she played a pivotal role in establishing one of the Gulf’s most important cultural institutions, overseeing its opening in 2010 and shaping its early collections and landmark exhibitions. Her curatorial vision has consistently bridged global perspectives with regional narratives, making her an ideal choice to guide Art Basel’s ambitions in Qatar.

The 2027 fair will explore the curatorial theme “between / بين”, which examines the generative potential of liminal spaces—places of encounter, exchange, fluidity, and possibility. This concept resonates strongly with Al-Khudhairi’s practice, which often navigates cultural intersections and dialogues across borders. “Qatar has played a meaningful role in shaping both my career and my curatorial practice, and I look forward to bringing that deep connection to this important project,” she stated in the official announcement.

Al-Khudhairi’s career spans continents and prestigious institutions. She previously served as Ferring Foundation Chief Curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, where she organized acclaimed exhibitions featuring artists such as Derek Fordjour, Hayv Kahraman, and Hajra Waheed. Earlier roles include co-artistic director of the 9th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea and positions at the Brooklyn Museum and High Museum of Art. Currently based in New York as a partner at C/O: Curatorial Office, she also co-curated the 2025 Hawaii Triennial. Her academic credentials include a BA in Art History from Georgia State University and an MA with distinction in Islamic Art and Architecture from SOAS, University of London.

This appointment builds on the success of the inaugural Art Basel Qatar, which debuted in February 2026 under the artistic vision of Egyptian artist Wael Shawky. That edition featured solo artist presentations and drew international attention to the vibrant arts ecosystem of the MENA region. By selecting Al-Khudhairi, organizers signal a continued commitment to thoughtful, regionally attuned programming that elevates local voices while fostering global dialogue.

The fair returns to Msheireb Downtown Doha, presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, with Qatar Airways as Premium Partner. Gallery applications are now open and will close on July 17, 2026, promising a tightly curated selection that highlights both established and emerging talents.

Al-Khudhairi’s leadership arrives at a moment when cultural institutions worldwide grapple with questions of identity, migration, and connection. Her emphasis on the “between” offers a poetic yet practical framework for navigating these complexities through art. As the art world watches closely, her vision promises to transform the 2027 edition into a landmark event that not only showcases exceptional work but also fosters meaningful cross-cultural understanding.

Art enthusiasts and professionals eager to engage with this evolving cultural landscape should mark their calendars for January 2027 and follow updates via Art Basel’s official announcement. Whether attending in person or following from afar, the 2027 fair under Al-Khudhairi’s direction is poised to deliver unforgettable artistic encounters.
