Global Art Market Rebounds 4% in 2025

The global art market rebounded in 2025, with total sales rising 4% year-on-year to an estimated $59.6 billion, according to the latest Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report 2026, authored by economist Dr. Clare McAndrew of Arts Economics. This marks a welcome shift after two consecutive years of decline, following the post-pandemic peak of $67.8 billion in 2022.

The recovery was driven primarily by renewed confidence at the high end of the market, where ultra-premium works attracted strong bidding. Public auction sales surged 9% to $20.7 billion, fueled by standout results in major sales rooms. A highlight was New York’s marquee auction week in November, which generated $2.2 billion across the leading houses—Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips—representing a significant rebound from prior periods and underscoring the appeal of blue-chip masterpieces.

Dealer sales showed more measured growth, increasing 2% to $34.8 billion and accounting for 58% of the global total. Galleries with higher turnover (over $10 million annually) reported a 3% uptick, while smaller and mid-tier dealers saw varied performance, with some segments benefiting from increased activity in more accessible price ranges.

Regionally, the United States retained its dominance, capturing 44% of global sales with $26 billion (up 5%). The UK followed at 18% ($10.5 billion, up 2%), and China stabilized at around 14% ($8.5 billion, modest growth despite economic headwinds). Other markets like France showed stronger gains.

Despite the positive momentum, challenges persist. Geopolitical instability, trade uncertainties, rising operational costs (up an estimated 5% on average), and uneven recovery across segments continue to influence collector behavior. The market remains below pre-pandemic highs in several areas, with private sales at auction houses dipping 5% to under $4.2 billion.

Transaction volumes edged up 2% to 41.5 million, signaling sustained engagement even as values recalibrate.
