Brazilian Artist Manoela Medeiros Emerges as a Leading Voice in Contemporary Hybrid Painting
Rio de Janeiro, March 21, 2026 — In an art world increasingly drawn to boundary-pushing practices, Brazilian visual artist Manoela Medeiros stands out for her innovative fusion of painting, sculpture, installation, and performance. Born in 1991 in Rio de Janeiro, Medeiros has built a career that challenges traditional definitions of medium and form, treating her canvases as archaeological sites where layers of paint are excavated to reveal hidden histories, textures, and relationships between nature, ruin, and the human body.

Medeiros studied at the prestigious Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro (2009–2015) and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (2012). This transatlantic education informs her practice—she lives and works between Rio de Janeiro and France—infusing her work with cross-cultural dialogues on space, time, and corporeality.

Her signature technique involves building up thick layers of acrylic paint, paste, and mineral pigments on canvas, then meticulously carving or “excavating” them to create relief-like surfaces that evoke ancient ruins or eroded landscapes. This process transforms flat paintings into sculptural objects, blurring the line between two-dimensional representation and three-dimensional intervention. Critics describe her works as reconciling humanity and nature, with recurring motifs of tropical flora, architectural fragments, and still-life elements that reference historical painting traditions while subverting them—often reinterpreting depictions of women in classical works or exploring “non-places” in modern landscapes.

Medeiros has garnered international attention through a series of solo exhibitions. Notable shows include Poeira Varrida at Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel in São Paulo (2017), Falling Walls at Double V Gallery in Marseille (2017), L’être Dissout Dans Le Monde at Galerie Chloé Salgado in Paris (2019), Concerto a Céu Aberto at Kubik Gallery in Porto (2020), and O Carnaval da Substância at Nara Roesler in São Paulo (2022). Her first solo presentation in New York, Tropical Still Life at Palo Gallery (September 6–October 4, 2025), marked a significant milestone, showcasing lush, excavated botanical forms that draw from Brazil’s rich biodiversity and colonial histories.
In 2026, Medeiros continues to gain momentum. She was featured in Contemporary Art Issue’s “8 Artists to Watch in 2026” roundup, highlighting her rising status among collectors and curators. Recent and upcoming shows include Naissent les Formes (also referred to as Comment naissent les formes) at Double V Gallery in Marseille (August 2025, with ongoing relevance), group presentations at Nara Roesler Rio de Janeiro (Erasure, February–March 2026), and her solo A River Within Me at Nara Roesler Rio de Janeiro (March–May 2026). Her work emphasizes the viewer’s physical interaction with textured surfaces, inviting engagement with paint as both archive and living entity. As sources note, her practice “escapes artistic definitions,” turning architecture into a corporeal experience.
As the 2026 art season unfolds with biennials and fairs emphasizing materiality and ecology, Manoela Medeiros’ work offers a compelling meditation on impermanence and renewal—proving that painting, far from static, can be a site of active discovery.
